FLIR Announces $8.6M Chemical Surface Detector (CSD) Contract Award

Dennis Barket, Jr. Vice President and General Manager, Detection

FLIR Systems has been named as a prime contractor on the Chemical Surface Detector (CSD) program by the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense (JPEO-CBD). The CSD program is managed by the Joint Project Manager for Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Contamination Avoidance (JPM NBC CA). The $8.6M award is for the Technology Maturation and Risk Reduction (TMRR) phase of the overall CSD program. FLIR will develop and deliver prototype hardware on this two-year program that will undergo Government testing.

FLIRs approach to the CSD builds on its existing hyperspectral technology being pursued under the Surface Contamination Locator (SCL) variant of the JPEO CBD Next Generation Chemical Detection (NGCD) program. Winning the CSD program enables FLIR to be a part of an important Department of Defense program that protects the warfighter. It also allows FLIR to advance its work in the hyperspectral field, with cutting edge imaging and processing technologies.

The system’s primary function is to map contamination, ultimately detecting and warning personnel. It will be designed to continually interrogate the surface and detect and identify contaminants in real time. When fielded, the CSD will become part of the next-generation Nuclear Biological Chemical Sensor Suite for the military’s Stryker Nuclear Biological Chemical Reconnaissance Vehicle (NBCRV).

For over 30 years, FLIR has safeguarded people and property by providing tools that see and sense harmful chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) substances. Intelligence, innovation, and intuitive design are featured in every FLIR device, so responders are prepared when the need arises.
