Why FLIR is preferred by firefighters: Usability

With so much happening during a fire or rescue operation, it's vital that firefighter tools are simple and easy to use. Complicated buttons and settings can make TICs impossible to use at the rescue operation.

 One-handed operation

Working with a TIC that requires the use of two hands—even briefly—can be dangerous during a fire. The FLIR K series' pistol-grip format and large buttons can be operated with one gloved hand, allowing you to move safely while keeping your eyes on fire scene.

 Wide field of view

Often thermal cameras, including those made for firefighters, offer a narrow field of view, meaning the camera live screen display only shows a limited section of the entire fire scene. Firefighters have to move their TICs around and sweep across rooms or target areas in order to gain a complete sense of the scene.

The FLIR K series uses a wide-angle lens close to human vision, allowing you to see the situation on-site. For example, the FLIR K series (K45, K55, K65) has a horizontal viewing angle of 51°. The FLIR K series can display three people, but other companies' products with a 25° angle can only display one person.

 Removable battery

The idea of having to stop and charge a TIC battery amid an active fire is a non-starter. FLIR K-Series TICs come with two batteries you can easily switch out in the field, meaning you can continue to use the camera while the spare battery charges. Plus, with about four hours per charge*, firefighters can to continue working without pause, even during longer activities such as search and rescue operations.
